student life

A combination of paid and non-paid supports assists ICS students after class in having a comprehensive college experience that prepares them for life after graduation, and encourages the development of natural supports. Freshman and sophomore students typically receive frequent paid supports, while Juniors and Seniors are connected to friends, service learning students, and as-needed Advising.

Student Life Support Staff

CCS (Campus and Community Support Students): The Integrated Course of Studies Student Life component is designed to provide support services to students in the most natural manner, with “services” unnoticed by other student peers. Exploration of the campus, identification of personal interest, and development of social skills is the primary focus for CCS students.

Student Life Advisors

Advisors are assigned to students to help buffer the transition from home to college and to provide guidance throughout the college experience as students take steps forward and, inevitably, take steps back. This accessible contact diverts students from contacting parents with issues that are most often difficult to deal with over the phone and without the whole picture. Initially, the students learn to contact advisors and, over time, the students learn to think through problems before contacting advisors.

ICS Support Staff

Provide instruction to students in their homes, and the community. These staff are part of the Academic Team, but often work in the evenings and weekends to ensure students are consistently demonstrating skills learned in the classroom.

Service Learning

Several UNCG departments have students completing volunteer hours with ICS students to meet course requirement. Service learning opportunities assist ICS students in transitioning from paid to natural supports.
